Spoonflower-Teacher-Erin-Kendal

Hey, there! I'm Erin Kendal — a self-taught surface pattern designer, Spoonflower expert, and top-seller.

Before I taught myself how to create patterns, I spent 15 years in a corporate job while running a creative side business as a maker.

I moved from maker to designer when I discovered Spoonflower and launched my surface pattern design business.

In 2020, my partner and I were able to quit our day jobs!

I created PSA to give other designers a clearer, more practical path forward—with the benefit of my hindsight—to save years of figuring it all out for yourself.

The techniques and principles can be applied by any designer, no matter your art style or niche. (Spoiler: you don’t even have to have a niche!)

“...consistently real value and meaningful content every week—it stands out above other memberships...” —
Hi Erin! I was wondering if switching over to an Annual Membership is still an option at the moment? I'm currently on the monthly plan and am looking to upgrade if possible. Thank you SO much for all the continually helpful and super practical info and support that you and Amber provide in this membership! It's something I've really looked forward to diving into every week since I joined. :) I think the fact that it's so specific to selling on spoonflower (yet somehow manages to be applicable to more as well!) is what has made it feel so approachable and motivating, and just really great in that it can address all these ever-evolving changes that are happening in real time. The fact that you consistently provide real value and substantial, meaningful content weekly has made stand out above other memberships I've joined in the past, and makes it feel worth the money for me - something that isn't easy to part with these days especially! Thanks again Erin! Sending best wishes for a happy summer!

My Spoonflower Story | Erin Kendal
Erin Kendal - Spoonflower teacher
My Spoonflower Story | Erin Kendal

I worked regular jobs for 20 years and for around 10 of those I had a side hustle, in a desperate attempt to quit my day job and live a creative life.

I opened a Spoonflower shop in late 2016 but spent no time on it —I just listed the designs I was creating for my baby store.

In January 2017 I made $1.90 for the entire month.

In the Fall of 2017, I read an article on Spoonflower seller, Shopcabin who was earning commissions topping 6 figures and I was BLOWN AWAY... but I still didn't take any action.

I was busy persisting with my handmade business and treating my Spoonflower shop like a second-rate business opportunity 🙄 I didn't give it the attention it deserved... but I was sharing a little on Instagram.

A year and a half into selling on Spoonflower I 'accidentally' hit the first commission bonus tier (meaning someone managed to find a simple design of mine and they bought a heap of it!)

That transaction got me to the first bonus threshold and I earned $43.73... ‘for doing nothing’ I told Daniel.

At that moment I realized I needed to take this shop seriously. I had just realized the potential of passive income.

So, in July 2019, I packed away my sewing machine for good and I've hit the 5% bonus threshold ever since (usually well before the middle of the month); and my partner and I were both able to quit our corporate jobs in 2020 — all from selling on Spoonflower!

Our family's life has changed forever and the passive income I make from selling on Spoonflower has afforded me the opportunity to pursue other interests like teaching!

We're also planning an international move to the other side of the world (Portugal) where our kids are enrolled to start school in September.

Yeah, I still pinch myself everyday.
